Dental Crowns

Easy Ways You Can Care for Your New Dental Crown

When you go in for restorative dental treatment at your local Sunnyvale, California dentist, a dental crown may be recommended. Dr. Ryan Zhao and the team at Harmony Smile Dental recommend dental crowns to patients with teeth severely weakened or damaged by extensive decay, root canals, physical trauma, and more.

Caring for your dental crown is important. Here are some ways to best do that.

Avoid Hard and Sticky Foods

Crowns may be strong and durable, but they can still become damaged, much like your natural teeth. If you chew on hard foods like ice, your dental crown can crack, chip, or break. This will lead to you needing to have your dental crown replaced sooner than it should. Foods that are overly chewy or sticky can also pose a risk to your crown, either by causing your crown to loosen or trapping sticky bits of food between your crown and gum. It is best to avoid foods like these whenever you can.

Regular Brushing and Flossing

While the crown itself can be coined as “artificial,” the underlying tooth is still very natural and will require regular oral health care to remain healthy and sound. While your crown will completely encapsulate the tooth, you still need to brush it to remove any sticky plaque that may have adhered to it. This will keep your crown looking great. You also need to floss regularly. Germs and tiny food particles will still get caught between the crown and your gum or adjacent tooth.

Kick Damaging Bad Habits

Do you bite your nails? Do you find that you chew the ends of your pens or pencils? Do you grind your teeth due to bruxism or stress? If you do, you must find a way to stop.

These habits may not only break your crown, but they can also chip or break your natural teeth. If you have ever tried to break these (and similar) habits without success, you should now try to double down on that effort so your crown will remain intact and healthy.
